Queensgate announces £1.5m car park investment in drive to reduce carbon footprint

Queensgate Shopping Centre has temporarily closed one of its car parks in what is to be the  start of a £1.5m investment to improve the energy efficiency of its car park collective.

The shopping centre’s Red Car Park (Royce) closed on Sunday 10 September, while Green, Yellow and Blue remain fully open. This temporary closure marks the start of the ongoing commitment to environmental sustainability and Queensgate’s commitment to reducing its carbon footprint in every aspect.

The main changes and most impactful to energy efficiency will see the installation of cutting-edge LED lighting systems that will give visitors greater and brighter visibility, while reducing energy waste. The exact percentage of energy waste reduction will depend on the specific circumstances, but it is not uncommon for car park LED lighting to achieve energy savings of 50% or more compared to traditional lighting technologies.

The two-month project for Red Car Park will finish with a deep clean of all services and access areas to the public, before the team move onto the next Car Park.

Catherine Lambert, Centre Director at Queensgate, expressed her enthusiasm for this project, stating, "At Queensgate, we are committed to delivering exceptional experiences to our shoppers while minimising our environmental impact. The closure of the Red Car Park and the subsequent energy efficiency improvements are part of our ongoing efforts to reduce our carbon footprint and create a more sustainable future for our community."

Queensgate Shopping Centre has been nationally recognised for its commitment to introducing ground-breaking energy saving initiatives and fulfilling its pledge to the environment.

Queensgate sets rigorous annual targets to work toward and we monitor our performance

focussing on the following key objectives;

  • To reduce waste and increase recycling.
  • To substantially reduce our carbon footprint
  • To maximise the efficiency of our use of natural resources
  • To prevent pollution and contamination wherever possible
  • To protect the Environment
