Gettin’ lippie with it

Autumn/winter beauty trends are our absolute fave to try out, as the dark nights and seasonal events are spot on for playing with dramatic looks and coming up with fun, new personas.

For this feature, we’re going to look at creating the perfect pout but first things, first. The golden rule for nailing flawless application is to have the right tools and for them to be nice and clean.

Our makeup bag must-haves include a blender brush, which is essential for foundation, concealer and liquid products. One for blush to build a subtle flush of colour, a powder variety for the final touches and a brow brush to help with framing the face. And to make us look wide-eyed and ready for the day, eyelash curlers.

With so many types on offer, our beauty mavens at the counters at John Lewis & Partners MAC, Superdrug and Boots will happily guide you through which ones will help you achieve the best results.

Now the equipment has been taken care of, it’s time to decide which style tribe you’re in this season. The spotlight was shining on lips at the major catwalk shows, with precision matte finishes going up against the high-shine gloss of the dark luxe trend.

Matte lippie has come a long way over the years and formulations are now super moisturising but we’d still suggest using a lip scrub to eliminate any lingering dry patches. A punchy colour works very well for day and night and you can’t go wrong with classic red.

To keep it modern, fresh-looking skin is a must so be sure to nourish from the inside out with plenty of water, and a hydrating foundation will offer additional help. A flick of the mascara wand, a sweep of blush and a pop of highlighter on the apples of your cheeks and you’re good to go.

For something a little moodier but no less beautiful, gothic romance is where it’s at. We’re not sure it’s even winter if we’re not sporting a berry lip! Go as dark as you dare with this one – think plum-black shades with a glass-like appearance. For the ultimate contrast and impact, go for sculpted, illuminated skin, black winged eyeliner and sleek hair.

Makeup is all about having fun and experimenting, so step out of your comfort zone and embrace the transformation potential in those little bottles, sticks and palettes of wonder.
