All about Thorntons

Did you know we’ve been making delicious chocolates for almost a hundred years? In fact, our very first shop was opened in Sheffield by Joseph William Thornton, who handed the keys to his teenage sons Norman and Stanley and said:

“Make this the best sweet shop in town!”

Well, they didn’t do a bad job, did they?

Over the next few years, as Thorntons got a name for itself, we created a uniquely rich and chewy ‘special’ toffee, that became so popular it became the fuel of the city’s steelworkers. And later, just after the Second World War, they hired one of Europe’s finest chocolatiers, Walter Willen, to bring Europe’s finest soft-centred chocolates to the UK and created Continental.

Today, we’re based in Derbyshire, employ some 4,000 chocolate lovers around the UK and we’re proud to be one of the best-loved and oldest names on the high street. But we haven’t forgotten our roots. We still make our extra special toffee and we’re still famous for our delicious Continentals. Most importantly, the joy and wide-eyed wonder of two small boys running a sweet shop remains at the heart of everything we do, constantly surprising us with new and ever more amazing recipes.

Chocolate Jubilee

To celebrate our 100 year Chocolate Jubilee we have created a range of scrumptious new products.

The first to launch is our Chocolate Jubilee box containing 100 chocolates including four delicious new flavours especially developed for our Centenary.

These are;

• Caramel Cup – Indulgent buttery caramel, in its crisp chocolate shell is reminiscent of when Norman Thornton first made caramels in 1921 and to this day caramel has been an extremely iconic part of the Thorntons range.
• Lime and Chilli - Our Master Chocolatier has been tirelessly working on this special Centenary chocolate. Bite into this chocolate and you firstly experience the zing of lime followed by a warm subtle chilli taste all encased in a milk chocolate shell.
• Hazelnut Praline - Rich dark chocolate with an indulgent crunchy praline filling and just a touch of salt. Simple yet mouth-wateringly good!
• Raspberry and Rose - A deliciously complex combination of flavours, sharp, yet sweet, raspberry flavour jam combined with a creamy raspberry mousse, makes a perfect pairing. Further complemented by the subtle back note of rose.
• Also contained within this huge double layer box will be a selection of our most loved chocolates from each of the chocolate ranges that we produce.
• Launching around the same time is our sensational limited edition Wonder chocolate box. Inside this gorgeous box will be 28 individually handmade chocolates and they are so special we will only be producing 200 individually numbered boxes for general sale.
