Guest Post: Natural Beauty at Queensgate

Many a day of my youth was spent in Queensgate, whether waiting tables in Maxine’s, being a retail assistant in River Island or shopping in Boots, The Body Shop or John Lewis for the latest beauty and make-up must haves. Admittedly, my tastes were not as refined or as naturally pure as they are today, and neither was the offering. But I’m glad to say that Queensgate’s natural and organic beauty selection has come a long way since my teenage years (we are going back to the 90s there, after all)!

If you’re thinking about making your beauty regime cleaner and greener and you live in Peterborough or the surrounding area, I am here to guide you through making the correct shopping decisions in (cue radio jingle from the late 90s) the capital city of shopping, Queensgate!

So let’s start at Boots, the biggest beauty retailer in Queensgate. Boots have come a long way since the days of Natural Collection, the make-up brand called so more for its looks than its ingredients! Visiting Boot, I was delighted to see that more and more natural brands are infiltrating this mainstream store. It’s always best to call the store ahead of your visit to ensure specific products are available, but even if they’re not you can always use the Click & Collect service on their website.

In terms of makeup, bareMinerals is the naturally inspired brand now available in Boots. They offer skincare formulated without parabens, synthetic fragrances and artificial oils, but also foundation, concealers and primers that offer health benefits to your skin when applied. And whilst we’re on the subject of application, if you’re looking for a green range of makeup brushes, look no further than Ecotools, featuring feather-soft bristles, sleek bamboo handles (an incredibly sustainable material), recycled aluminium ferrules, and are also 100% cruelty free. For lip colours, check out Burt’s Bees’ fabulous range of Lip Shimmers, with just the right amount of shimmer (i.e. not too frosted!) and perfect subtle shades for summer.

Moving on to skincare,  I was pleasantly surprised to see Trilogy on offer in Boots, a brand I am more accustomed to seeing in my local health and wellbeing store. For me, my must-have product in the range is the Everything Balm, a superb multi-tasker that you can use for almost anything – I’ve tried it for cleansing, as a hair protectant on holiday, healing balm, lip balm and in flight skin hydration. Quite simply, it’s great for travel! Also, Trilogy’s Rosehip Oil is a cult beauty product, and is priced well compared to others in the market.

When it comes to the best natural body care at Boots, I’m a big fan of This Works Perfect Legs Skin Miracle. A magic serum featuring skin antioxidants vitamin C and E to help even out any skin imperfections and repair. It also contains arnica which helps fade bruising, another important factor for me as I play softball and despite the name, it ain’t a soft ball!

With the sun out in the sky, we may be turning our thoughts to getting that summer glow and tanning. Whilst I prefer a real tan to a fake one, Boots do have on offer Vita Liberata, a previous Biteable Best of Beauty Award WINNER! This self tanner features certified organic botanicals and my top pick, the pHenomenal offers a natural looking tan that lasts 2-3 weeks!

Don’t worry, there’s something for the guys too, in the shape of Bulldog. I am sure this brand will please even the fussiest of grooming aficionados, for my dad, my other half, and his dad are Bulldog fans! And, just because it’s for guys, doesn’t mean I never use it myself; their Original Shower Gel has a hit of menthol essential oil to really get me going on those early starts!

Last stop in Boots and that’s the natural selection for children. Look no further than the baby range from Weleda; a mild range featuring calendula which is perfect for young skin. I have an (adult) friend who swears by the Weather Protection Cream for her sensitive skin.

Moving on to Lush! Lush handmade cosmetics have come a long way with their formulas and they are more natural than ever. Having said that, some products do still contain parabens and other chemicals I’d prefer not to be there, but rather than preach I’d say read the labels, look up the ingredients online (ewg.org is a great starting point) and come to your own conclusions! For me, my favourite products in Lush have to be their phenomenal bath bombs that turn the water pretty colours and fill the bathroom, nay the whole of my home with their fragrant aroma.

Finally, on to Superdrug… like Boots, Superdrug offers a Click & Collect service so you can shop online and then pick up in store. Two brands to check out in my opinion are Pacifica and JASON. JASON offer great every day beauty products for all the family, and are well priced, so particularly good for those on a budget, family shoppers and students. The body washes are almost a litre in size, cost just under £10 and will last months! Pacifica offer fabulous home fragrance on the Superdrug website – candles and reed diffusers – but look out for their perfumes and mineral makeup. My favourite scents are Tuscan Blood Orange and California Star Jasmine at the moment, however this does change with the season, and my mood!
